Differences between a fixed, removable and retractable hitch

Fixed couplings

This is the trailer and caravan hitch at the best value for money, because unlike high-end models, its ball joint (also called car hitch ball) is to be bolted to its mounting lugs. To remove the gooseneck from the vehicle, the nuts must also be unbolted. Once the ball joint has been removed, the fixing lugs of the swan neck couplers remain visible behind the vehicle. Rare case: on certain vehicles, reversing radars can detect the towball. If this happens, just change their settings slightly.

Removable standard ball hitch with tool

A hitch with standard ball joint (also called standard ball) is recommended on commercial vehicles. The ball joint is fixed on a fixing plate, which can include 2 or 4 holes. The coupling ball can also be fitted with 2 or 4 holes. This plate remains visible once the ball joint has been removed. The advantage of this type of trailer hitch is that it allows the user to attach construction machinery to it, via a mixed hook. The mixed hook replaces the ball joint.

Removable hitches

Some have a handle. It is necessary to place the towball in its mechanism and press the handle to lock it. Some of these ball joints are not fitted with a lock. It is therefore a good compromise between the detachable entry-level hitch and the removable and lockable high-end hitch. Some are equipped with a thumb wheel and an anti-theft system by key. The key must be turned in the barrel to unlock (or lock) the knob. The ball joint (or coupling ball) automatically engages in its mechanism.

There are 3 types of removable couplings: with horizontal, diagonal or vertical ball joint. This corresponds to their sense of engagement. For a horizontal and diagonal ball joint, the fixing lugs of the auto coupling often remain visible once the ball joint is removed. When a vertical ball joint is removed, the hitch is hidden by the bumper. These models are suitable for all uses: trailer hitch, caravan hitch, bicycle carrier, horse-drawn van, boat-carrier trailer, etc.

Retractable hitches

It is the most high-end type of car coupling (and therefore the most expensive). The ball joint can be rotated manually under the bumper when not in use. In terms of ease of use and aesthetics, retractable hitches are the best.

Static mass, towable mass, D value & approval plate

Static mass

The static mass corresponds to the maximum boom weight (vertical load). This is important when you want to transport a bicycle carrier on a hitch. Example: if the weight on the boom is 75 kg, the cumulative weight of the bicycle carrier and the bikes installed must in no case exceed 75 kg.

Towable mass

The towable mass corresponds to the maximum weight that can tow the coupled vehicle of a trailer or a caravan. Example: if my hitch has 1600 kg of towable mass, I can tow a caravan or a trailer including a total load of 1600 kg.

D value

The D-value of a coupling is a technical value which is used as a basis for the calculation of the towable mass. It corresponds to the strength of the drawbar. The value D is indicated on the coupling license plate.
